How to Measure for Body Fat Calculation
Accurate measurements are key to accurate body fat results. Learn the proper technique for neck, waist, and hip measurements — with diagrams and pro tips.
How to Measure Your Neck
Measure at the Adam's apple (larynx). Wrap the tape measure around your neck, keeping it horizontal. The tape should be snug but not tight. Look straight ahead — do NOT look down or up during measurement. Take the measurement after exhaling normally.
Pro tip: If you have a prominent Adam's apple, measure just below it for consistency.
How to Measure Your Waist
For men: measure at the navel (belly button) level. For women: measure at the narrowest point of your waist, usually just above the navel. Keep the tape horizontal. Do NOT suck in your stomach — breathe normally and measure after exhaling. The tape should be snug against skin but not compressing.
Common mistake: Measuring over clothing or sucking in your stomach can add 2-3% error to your body fat result.
How to Measure Your Hips (Women Only)
Measure at the widest point of your hips and buttocks. Keep the tape horizontal — it should be parallel to the floor. Stand with your feet together. The tape should be snug but not tight.
Pro Tips for Accurate Measurements
- Use a flexible cloth tape measure — not a metal construction tape
- Measure in the morning, before eating, after using the bathroom
- Measure twice and take the average
- Have someone else measure you if possible — self-measuring introduces error
- Use cm for more precision than inches
- Record your measurements each time so you can track technique consistency
